The Madrid Open is up and running and today has seen the top seeds in both the men's and women's draws begin their campaigns with both Carlos Alcaraz (19) and Iga Swiatek (21) securing wins. We'll bring you all of the news and highlights right here on the Tennis Tracker throughout the weekend.

00:06 CET - The day's final match in Madrid is currently being played out between Alexander Zverev (26) and Roberto Carballes Baena (30).

The likes of Daniil Medvedev (27) and Aryna Sabalenka (24) will be headlining Saturday's play.

00:03 CET - The ATP Flash Moment of the day occurred in the incredible third set between Holger Rune (19) and Alexander Bublik (25). Rune won the match in the end after a lengthy tie-break but Bublik played the star shot of the contest.

23:12 CET - Our WTA Flash Moment of the day comes from the late match between Aliaksandra Sasnovich (29) and Marie Bouzkova (24). The two played out a long contest, eventually won by Bouzkova but Sasnovich won this standout point.

21:58 CET - Men's number seven Holger Rune (19) has beaten Alexander Bublik (25) after a marathon final tie-break in Madrid. The match finished 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(11-9).

Other winners on the men's side today included Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (23), Hubert Hurkacz (26), and Roberto Bautista-Agut (35).

21:31 CET - World number one Iga Swiatek (21) has continued her imperious form into Madrid, beating Julia Grabher (26) 6-3, 6-2 to progress to the third round.

In other results on the women's side, Victoria Azarenka (33) was knocked out by Alycia Parks (22), while Anastasia Potapova (22), Ekaterina Alexandrova (28), and Lesia Tsurenko (33) all got wins.

21:26 CET - The ATP has announced that it will introduce an Electronic Line Calling (ELC) system into its events from 2025. 

The Grand Slams have taken different approaches to the implementation of ELC.

19:41 CET -  Third seed Jessica Pegula (29) has defeated Magdalena Frech (25) in Madrid to advance. The match finished 7-6, 6-3.

18:22 CET - It briefly looked like the top seed would fall at the first hurdle when Carlos Alcaraz (19) lost the first set to Emil Ruusuvuori (24) but the Barcelona champion turned things around to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Before that, Grigor Dimitrov (31) and Karen Khachanov (26) also claimed victories.

15:35 CET - World number seven Elena Rybakina (23) has lost 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 to the unseeded Anna Kalinskaya (24) in the second big upset of the day following Ruud's defeat earlier. 

15:10 CET - Andrey Rublev (25), the fifth seed in Madrid, has beaten 2013 finalist Stan Wawrinka (38) 7-5, 6-4 to make it through to the next round.

13:50 CET - 12th women's seed Barbara Krejcikova (27) has beaten Danka Kovinic (28) 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, while eighth seed Daria Kasatkina (25) has prevailed 6-4, 6-3 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (31).

12:45 CET - The day has started off with a big upset, with third seed and 2022 French Open finalist Casper Ruud (24) losing 6-3, 6-4 to qualifier Matteo Arnaldi. The world number four has now lost three of his last four matches, and was expected to win all of them.

Shortly before Ruud lost, 30th seed Tallon Griekspoor (26) retired with an injury after losing the first set to Jaume Munar (25), who advances to the next round as a result. 

11:31 CET - Well, the day's play has started on both the men's and women's sides in Madrid. It's going to be a hectic day and weekend of top-tier tennis action.

08:23 CET - Andy Murray (35) has made a poor start to the clay court season, being knocked out in the first round of the Madrid Open yesterday after suffering the same fate in Monte Carlo.

Despite that though, he has no doubts about competing in the French Open. 

"I would like to play just purely because I don't know if I'll get another opportunity to play again," he said. "Whilst I feel fit and healthy, I would like to give it a go.

"It's impossible to say what the right thing to do is, but obviously it's a Grand Slam. I would like the opportunity to play."
