Oriol Romeu headed home a close-range goal two minutes from time to cap off a sweet return to Catalonia as Girona beat Real Valladolid 2-1 in a topsy-turvy LaLiga encounter.

It was a battle between two of the newly-promoted sides at Estadi Montilivi, as both teams sat in mid-table, neck and neck on points after four games heading into this fixture, with Valladolid making their first away trip since a four-goal humbling at the hands of Barcelona.

The contest didn’t get off to the best of starts for the visitors, who lost Sergi Guardiola in the sixth minute to injury.

Just as Valladolid attempted to get things back on track, Girona took the lead through on-loan Real Madrid attacking midfielder Reinier Jesus, who poked Aleix Garcia’s pass into the net from close range to score his first goal of the campaign.

Despite losing another player, Luis Perez, to injury and having a penalty appeal waved away, Valladolid hit back just before the break, as Monchu expertly fired in a strike from long range, which ultimately bounced in off the post.

The second half followed on from the first in being a bitty affair, and it became apparent that it was going to take something special in front of goal for either side to come away with the three points.

That something special came late on as Girona stole victory when Romeu powered in a header inside the six-yard box to send the home fans into delirium and register their second La Liga victory of the season.
