Last minute Joselu leveller for Espanyol snatches victory from Celta Vigo
Espanyol looked better in the early going and took control of the contest fairly quickly, coming close to finding the back of the net inside the first 10 minutes, but Sergi Darder’s shot from the edge of the box was rattled off the post when Agustin Marchesin was beaten.
The hosts managed to recover as the game progressed, however, and they created their first clear scoring opportunity in the 21st minute thanks to Goncalo Paciencia, though the striker’s header couldn’t find the back of the net.
Celta kept pushing the lines forward and were in complete control of possession, but they had to wait until first half stoppage time to break the deadlock. Aspas, who had been fairly quiet throughout the first half, took advantage of a delightful pass from Augusto Solari to score the opener.
The home side changed their approach in the second half, knowing they were leading the contest and could have doubled their tally early after the break, but Renato Tapia’s effort from the edge of the box was saved by Benjamin Lecomte.
Paciencia continued to create havoc in the final third, and the Portuguese forward doubled Celta’s lead with a towering header following an excellent cross from Javi Galan.
However, Celta’s two-goal lead wouldn’t last long, as Edu Exposito pulled one back for the visitors, with plenty of time left to potentially complete their comeback.
That resurrection was complete deep into stoppage time, as VAR awarded Espanyol a spot-kick which Joselu converted, rescuring an unlikely point for Diego Martinez's side.
