OGC Nice’s poor recent head-to-head record against Strasbourg continued with a 1-1 home draw that ensured the hosts have won only one of their last six Ligue 1 meetings with Le Racing.

Lucien Favre marked his return as a Nice boss with a draw against Toulouse last weekend, but he still had the chance to record a win in his first home game in charge. However, it was the visitors who had the best opportunities in the opening 25 minutes.

Kevin Gameiro attempted to lift the ball over debutant Kasper Schmeichel, but the former Leicester City goalkeeper was on hand to deny the Strasbourg striker. Just moments later, Schmeichel had to be alert once again, diving down low to stop Alexander Djiku’s sweetly-timed volley from finding the net.

At the other end of the pitch, Nice were finding it tough to find a way through a resilient Strasbourg defence, but the hosts were gifted the opportunity to open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 35th minute. Gerzino Nyamsi’s rash challenge on Amine Gouiri presented Andy Delort with the chance to emphatically drill his spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Although they took a lead into half time, Les Aiglons were fortunate not to concede within a minute of the restart. Habib Diallo attempted to round off a promising move from the visitors, however, Schmeichel continued a fine debut performance with another important save to thwart the striker.

The Danish international may have denied Diallo, but he was unable to prevent Gameiro from guiding the ball into the net with a delicate lob.

Nice’s second-half performance failed to improve following the equaliser, which forced Favre into making a triple substitution that included the introduction of Aaron Ramsey, who scored on his debut last weekend.

Unfortunately for Favre, his changes failed to produce a winner resulting in his return to the club beginning with consecutive 1-1 draws. Strasbourg, meanwhile, will be content with a battling away performance that yielded their first point of the season.
