Former number one Medvedev wins in Vienna, Auger-Aliassime triumphs in Basel
The number one seed Medvedev lost his serve twice in the first set, something that has never happened to him in a tournament before. He also lost the opening set, but dominated from the second set onwards despite one more service loss. He won the first three match points at 5:1 on his opponent's serve and finally converted the seventh in the next game after two and a quarter hours.
Former world number one Medvedev, who welcomed a daughter with his wife Daria a few weeks ago, defeated Shapovalov for the fourth time in a row and improved their record to 4:2. He moves up one place to third ahead of Casper Ruud in Monday's edition of the rankings.
Auger-Aliassime did not lose his serve once during the entire tournament in Basel. He helped himself to victory over Rune in their opening duel with 11 aces. He scored one break in each set and converted his third match point after one hour and 40 minutes. He also recorded his 13th straight win.
22-year-old Auger-Aliassime, who defeated world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the semifinals, moves up one spot in the world rankings to No. 8, equaling his career high.
Rune improved even more, although he fell short of his third title of the year and his career. In the new edition of the rankings, the 19-year-old Dane jumps from 25th to 18th.
