Cremonese claimed their first point of the Serie A season with a scrappy 0-0 draw at home against Sassuolo in what was the first meeting between the two sides in the top flight.

It was almost a nightmare start for the hosts when Armand Laurienté found an unmarked Andrea Pinamonti in the area, but the forward put his header wide of the post. Cremonese recovered well from conceding that early chance and carved out a good opportunity themselves. However, after being teed up by Cyril Dessers, Luca Zanimacchia criminally put his shot wide. Dessers continued to cause problems for Sassuolo and thought he had scored his first goal for the club when he found the bottom corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR intervention.

The last chance of the half fell to Maxime Lopez following a slick move, but his shot didn’t trouble Ionuț Radu, keeping the scores level at the interval. The openings came thick and fast following the restart and, after good opportunities for Dessers and Giorgos Kyriakopoulos, Pinamonti had the ball in the back of the net. Again, though, it was ruled out for offside. The visitors’ pressure then started to increase, with Pinamonti and Laurienté coming within inches of breaking the deadlock.

The standard of finishing was ultimately poor throughout, with Sassuolo clearly missing their injured talisman Domenico Berardi as they mustered seven shots on target without scoring. Despite both teams pushing for a winner, neither really looked like beating the opposing goalkeeper. The result sees Cremonese stay in 19th, now a point ahead of fellow strugglers Monza, while Sassuolo climb up to 11th.
